Local rules

Before you drive in Zurich

  • A Swiss motorway vignette costs CHF 40 and exists only as a yearly pass, valid from 1 December to 31 January of the following year — as a windscreen sticker or an e-vignette tied to the number plate. Using a motorway without one is fined CHF 200.
  • Switzerland is in Schengen but outside the EU customs area, so customs checks at the border are routine; keep the registration certificate and the rental agreement in the car.
  • Speeding penalties are fixed by law and climb quickly; serious excesses are treated as criminal offences.
  • Where signs require it in winter, snow chains are mandatory on mountain roads.
