Local rules

Before you drive in Milan

  • Area C covers the historic centre inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni. Cameras at the gates record every car, and a €7.50 day ticket must be activated for the number plate; check current days and hours on comune.milano.it.
  • Many Italian town centres are ZTL zones enforced by cameras. Fines reach the car's owner weeks or months later and are forwarded to the driver on the contract.
  • Motorways are tolled at barriers, payable by card or cash on exit.
  • From 15 November to 15 April, signposted roads — including many Alpine routes — require winter tyres or chains on board.
